Mistral AI, a leading European AI provider, secured US$830 million in new debt from a consortium of seven banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, and MUFG, to purchase 13,800 Nvidia chips for an AI-enabled data center near Paris, aiming to enhance Europe's AI competitiveness.
This financing marks Mistral's first debt raising, driven by strong European demand for AI infrastructure to rival US and Chinese dominance. The data center in Bruyeres-le-Chatel is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2026.
CEO Arthur Mensch stated that scaling infrastructure in Europe is critical for empowering customers and ensuring AI innovation and autonomy remain central to Europe. Mistral offers a full stack of AI products, including models and infrastructure services, to governments and enterprises, positioning itself as a European alternative to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The French company previously invested €1.2 billion into Sweden for similar facilities and aims to secure 200 megawatts of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027. This initiative supports the EU's goal of strengthening digital sovereignty.
Mistral also partners with Nvidia as part of the Nvidia Nemotron Coalition, combining its specialized model architecture and full stack AI platform with Nvidia's resources and development tools.
