NVIDIA and Emerald AI partnered with AES, Constellation, Invenergy, NextEra Energy, Nscale Energy & Power, and Vistra to develop "flexible AI factories" that connect to the grid faster, generate AI tokens, and operate as grid-supporting energy assets, aiming to unlock up to 100 gigawatts of capacity across the U.S. power system.
This strategic collaboration addresses the significant energy demands of AI by integrating NVIDIA's Vera Rubin DSX AI Factory reference design and DSX Flex software library with Emerald AI's Conductor platform for computational flexibility and onsite energy resource orchestration. The initiative allows AI factories to utilize co-located generation and storage as bridge power for accelerated deployment, subsequently enabling these resources to flexibly supply the grid and support broader power system reliability.
This approach is designed to bring AI capacity online more rapidly, reduce the need for infrastructure sized solely for peak demand, and lower the long-term cost per AI token by preventing asset underutilization. The companies intend to identify and advance projects using this architecture, with DSX Flex expected to be deployed commercially later this year at the NVIDIA AI Factory Research Center in Virginia, fostering faster grid interconnections and strengthening U.S. energy leadership.
