Meta struck a deal with Entergy Louisiana to fund the energy infrastructure for its $27 billion mega data center in Richland Parish, LA, covering new natural gas plants, transmission lines, and battery storage, alongside renewable and future nuclear development.
The Wall Street Journal reported Meta will fund seven new natural gas power plants with a combined output of 5,200 megawatts, 240 miles of 500 kilovolt transmission lines, and battery energy storage at three locations. Additionally, Meta commits to funding up to 2,500 MW of new renewable resources and signed a memorandum of understanding for future nuclear power development.
This initiative addresses a pledge by tech companies, including Meta, to offset rising local electricity costs attributed to power-hungry AI data centers, although this pledge lacks binding enforcement. The deal also responds to increasing community backlash and regulatory pressure, highlighted by a recent bill from Sen.
Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposing a moratorium on data center construction.
