Nvidia invested $2 billion in Marvell Technology, forming a strategic partnership to integrate Marvell into Nvidia's AI Factory and AI-RAN ecosystem, accelerating their joint push into artificial intelligence and silicon photonics technology.
Marvell confirmed the $2 billion investment, stating the partnership utilizes Nvidia's "NVLink Fusion" technology and includes collaboration on silicon photonics, an optical semiconductor technology that maximizes data transfer speeds and power efficiency by using light instead of electricity. Marvell chair and CEO Matt Murphy emphasized that this partnership reflects the increasing importance of high-speed consolidation, optical interconnects, and accelerated infrastructure for AI expansion.
This strategic move follows Marvell's recent $3.3 billion acquisition of Celestial AI, a company specializing in photonic interconnect technology. Nvidia continues to significantly expand its business beyond graphics processing units (GPUs), building on its 2019 acquisition of Mellanox for $6.9 billion and its effective acquisition of Groq in December last year through a $20 billion technology license deal and extensive hiring of core personnel.
