Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales have announced a joint venture to combine their satellite and space activities, aiming to create a leading European player in the space sector.
This new entity seeks to develop a comprehensive portfolio of technologies and end-to-end solutions, excluding space launchers. Airbus will hold a 35% majority stake, with Leonardo and Thales each holding 32.5%.
The venture is expected to generate mid-triple-digit million euros in annual operating income synergies within five years and employ 25,000 people. The move is strategically driven by Europe's desire for a homegrown alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink, which currently dominates the satellite broadband sector.
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have advocated for a strong domestic space industry to ensure technological sovereignty. The announcement led to a positive market reaction, with European defense stocks rising.
Analysts view this as a crucial step for Europe to re-establish its space industry as a global force, providing the critical mass needed to compete effectively.
