Danone, the global food and drink giant, has agreed to acquire British meal replacement firm Huel for an estimated one billion euros (£870 million), as reported by the Financial Times, pending regulatory approval.
This strategic move aims to accelerate Huel's international growth and expand Danone's presence in the functional nutrition sector. Hertfordshire-based Huel, founded by Julian Hearn in 2015, offers nutritionally complete food products like powders, snack bars, and drinks, having rapidly grown into an omnichannel business with a strong direct-to-consumer foundation and expanding retail presence.
Danone CEO Antoine de Saint-Affrique stated the acquisition aligns with Danone's "renew Danone strategy" and mission of delivering health through food, combining Huel's digital capabilities with Danone's global reach and nutritional expertise. Huel CEO James McMaster noted the deal provides the necessary infrastructure, distribution, and R&D capabilities for further expansion into new markets, capitalizing on growing demand for convenient, complete nutrition.
The deal is subject to closing conditions, including regulatory approval, as stated by the Press Association.
