Europe's benchmark natural gas prices (TTF) have seen a significant rebound in recent weeks, driven primarily by supply disruptions in Norway, now Europe's largest gas supplier.
Outages and maintenance at key Norwegian facilities, including the Hammerfest LNG terminal and gas processing plants in Nyhamna and Kollsnes, have capped gas flows, leading to higher spot prices. The July TTF contract surged to $42.12/MWh (38.57 euros), a substantial increase from 25 euros/MWh just three weeks prior.
This European price surge has, in turn, propelled Asia's spot LNG prices higher, with Rystad Energy noting the Asian market's volatility is tracking the TTF. Last week, North Asia's August delivery spot LNG prices soared 50% to a three-month high of $13.50/MMBtu.
This follows a period of declining prices amid subdued global demand. Analysts anticipate warmer summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere will further increase energy demand for cooling, potentially sustaining upward pressure on gas and LNG prices.
The interconnected global gas market means supply shocks in one region quickly ripple across others.
