President Trump announced a deal with Iran, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, to immediately and permanently terminate military operations and lift the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, with a signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.
This agreement concludes a three-and-a-half-month conflict during which Iran controlled the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and gas passage, and the U.S. blockaded Iranian ports. Trump confirmed the U.S. will lift its blockade and facilitate mine removal in the Strait after the deal is signed.
Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, signaled Iran views the deal as a victory, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan confirmed the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The deal does not include Israel, which had conducted a deadly strike in Lebanon condemned by Trump.
European leaders from the U.K., France, Germany, and Italy, along with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, praised the breakthrough, calling for swift implementation and the urgent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. European leaders also emphasized that sanctions relief must be tied to verifiable nuclear steps, a point not explicitly addressed by Trump in his Sunday statements.
