Key Takeaway

Strong public demand for AI regulation in the UK means increased scrutiny and potential operational hurdles for AI developers. This means higher compliance costs for tech companies, slower market adoption in regulated sectors like healthcare and finance, and potential shifts in R&D priorities for AI firms. It also means a growing market for AI governance and ethics solutions.

Public First's extensive nationally representative poll of 2,000 UK adults reveals strong public support for greater AI regulation, with 62% backing a new government agency, alongside significant concerns about AI's impact on employment and mixed emotions regarding its rapid advancements.

The survey indicates that 38% of respondents believe AI progress has been faster than expected, with curiosity being the most common emotion, closely followed by excitement and worry. A substantial 40% of current workers anticipate AI could perform their job better within a decade, and 64% expect AI to increase unemployment, prompting 57% to believe governments should prevent AI from taking human jobs.

The public overwhelmingly favors national governments, regulators, and the legal system to decide AI tool usage, with only 21% trusting developers. Furthermore, 29% of respondents expressed worry about advanced AI attempting to take over human civilization, and 21% believe there is at least a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within 100 years.
