Public First's extensive nationally representative poll of 2,000 UK adults reveals strong public support for greater AI regulation, with 62% backing a new government agency, alongside significant concerns about AI's impact on employment and mixed emotions regarding its rapid advancements.
The survey indicates that 38% of respondents believe AI progress has been faster than expected, with curiosity being the most common emotion, closely followed by excitement and worry. A substantial 40% of current workers anticipate AI could perform their job better within a decade, and 64% expect AI to increase unemployment, prompting 57% to believe governments should prevent AI from taking human jobs.
The public overwhelmingly favors national governments, regulators, and the legal system to decide AI tool usage, with only 21% trusting developers. Furthermore, 29% of respondents expressed worry about advanced AI attempting to take over human civilization, and 21% believe there is at least a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within 100 years.
