US President Donald Trump is considering a plan to penalize NATO member states that did not support the United States and Israel during the recent war with Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal, involving the redeployment of American forces away from uncooperative nations.
This proposal, currently in early stages but gaining traction among senior administration figures, stops short of Trump's previous threats to withdraw entirely from NATO, which requires Congressional approval. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Washington for talks with Trump, seeking to ease strains within the alliance.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated it was "pretty sad that NATO has turned its back on the American people" during the conflict. Specific European NATO members, including Spain and France, reportedly declined support, with Spain barring US aircraft from key bases and France refusing transit for US military flights carrying equipment to Israel.
