Florida schools are implementing the "Campus Guardian Angel" drone system, a new technology designed to enhance police response to school shootings, with a pilot program backed by $557,000 in state funding and full implementation costs exceeding $1 million.
This initiative addresses the prevalence of school shootings in America, particularly in Florida, which has documented over 60 incidents since 2018, according to WTXL citing the K-12 School Shooting Database. The drone system deploys in seconds, providing immediate situational awareness to police and demonstrating the capability to use force to delay threats, as shown in a demonstration at the Leon County Schools District Security Center.
Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna stated that the investment in drones complements other security measures like additional deputy sheriffs, security monitors, weapons detection dogs, and AI software. The state funding supports pilot programs in three school districts, with Leon County under consideration, aiming to improve safety and response times in educational environments.
