Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched a formal investigation into OpenAI and its AI technologies, including ChatGPT, citing significant concerns over data handling, potential criminal misuse, child safety risks, and national security vulnerabilities, with subpoenas expected to follow.
Uthmeier stated that the rapid development of AI introduces risks, specifically questioning whether data or technologies could fall into the hands of adversarial entities like the Chinese Communist Party. The Attorney General referenced allegations of ChatGPT's use in generating child sexual abuse material, content encouraging self-harm, and its potential connection to a mass shooting at Florida State University.
The investigation formally commenced, and subpoenas will be issued to gather information on OpenAI's development, deployment, and monitoring practices. Uthmeier emphasized that AI companies must be held accountable for harm caused by negligence or insufficient safeguards.
Concurrently, he urged the Florida Legislature to enact new laws to protect children and grant his office enhanced powers to address emerging AI threats, reflecting increasing regulatory pressure on the AI industry.
