Rivian has unveiled the R2, a crucial new electric SUV targeting a $45,000 entry price, potentially dropping below $40,000 with tax credits.
Positioned as a more affordable, compact alternative to its R1 lineup, the R2 boasts over 300 miles of range, sub-3.0 second 0-60 mph acceleration, and significant off-road capabilities with 9.8 inches of ground clearance. Its design, while retaining Rivian's signature look, is sized similarly to a Tesla Model Y but with a boxier, taller form factor, making it suitable for global markets like Europe.
The R2 will leverage a new platform designed for economies of scale, with Rivian planning to produce up to 400,000 units annually from this platform. Initial production will occur at the existing Illinois plant, with the Georgia plant delayed to conserve cash.
This model represents Rivian's strategic move to capture a broader family SUV market, aiming for a "Model 3 moment" to drive significant volume and improve financial viability.
