An explosion at Qatar's Ras Laffan industrial area, specifically the Barzan gas supply facility, killed 13 people and injured 66 others on Sunday night as state-run QatarEnergy attempted to restart operations following previous Iranian attacks.
The blast occurred as workers tried to resume operations after Iran bombed the facility during the war, causing Qatar to shut down production due to Iran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz. Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi confirmed the incident was an accident, not sabotage, stating the deceased were from India and Pakistan, and the injured included people from Qatar and various African and Asian nations.
The Barzan plant, primarily owned by Qatar with a small share by ExxonMobil, has a capacity of almost 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day, which Qatar uses for local electricity generation and water desalination. This incident follows a March Iranian missile strike on Ras Laffan, which caused extensive damage, and could further disrupt global energy markets given Qatar's position as a top natural gas producer.
