A federal judge, James Boasberg, quashed grand jury subpoenas targeting Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, prompting sharp criticism from DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
Pirro labeled the ruling "outrageous" and "untethered to the law," asserting it effectively granted Powell immunity from investigation into alleged false statements regarding a $2.5 billion Fed headquarters renovation. Boasberg, an Obama appointee, concluded the Justice Department's probe was overwhelmingly intended to pressure Powell into cutting interest rates or resigning, citing a "mountain of evidence" and noting no crime was shown beyond "displeasing the President." Pirro, who insists the subpoenas did not specifically target Powell, announced her office would appeal the decision.
She argued the ruling sets a dangerous precedent by allowing defendants to evade investigation based on claims of being targeted, thereby "neutering" the grand jury's investigative power and undermining the criminal justice system.
