The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is preparing for a weeks-long offensive in southern Lebanon, aiming to eliminate Hezbollah and its terrorist infrastructure, potentially by the holiday of Shavuot (May 26).
This operation, dubbed "Northern Arrows," marks a strategic shift from passive defense to aggressive forward deployment, pushing forces 7-9 kilometers into Lebanese territory with potential for deeper incursions. The IDF's strategy links Hezbollah's defeat to the potential collapse of the Iranian regime, viewing it as severing the "arms of the octopus" after addressing the "head." Challenges include mounting reservist fatigue, uncertainty regarding the operation's exact duration, and Hezbollah's tactic of using United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) positions as cover.
The international ceasefire mechanism, involving the U.S. and U.N., has effectively collapsed, with U.S. officers now focused on deconfliction rather than enforcement. The IDF's objective is to restore normal life to northern Israeli communities by conducting operations deep within southern Lebanon, signaling a long-term commitment to disarming Hezbollah, a goal unmet since 2006.
