Nationwide protests in Iran challenging the ruling theocracy appear to be subsiding following a severe crackdown by security forces.

Activists report that at least 2,637 people have been killed, an increase of 22 from the previous day, with the death toll exceeding that of any other unrest in decades. The United States has announced new sanctions on Iranian officials accused of suppressing the demonstrations, which began due to economic issues and currency collapse.

The Group of Seven and the European Union are also considering sanctions. The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting.

While the intensity of protests has faded, Iran has signaled concerns about foreign threats, particularly from the U.S., which has threatened military action. Iran's airspace was temporarily shut down, and international airlines are avoiding its airspace due to security concerns.

The U.S. has indicated that 'all options remain on the table' regarding potential actions against Iran.
