Chicago establishes a major quantum computing campus, the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, on a former U.S. Steel site, aiming to lead the next high-tech era and accelerate Illinois's economic growth, with President Trump signing executive orders to speed development.
The park will host one of the world's largest quantum computing sites, commercializing technology that harnesses nature's smallest particles to process information at unimaginable speeds. Quantum computers are expected to solve problems current systems cannot, including discovering new drugs for intractable diseases and better materials for electric-vehicle batteries.
Proponents also plan to use quantum sensors for more accurate measurements and quantum communications networks for secure data transmission. President Trump signed two executive orders on Monday, June 22, 2026, specifically aimed at accelerating quantum technology development, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
