Former President Donald Trump announced Apple will partner with Intel to design and build chips in the United States, a move that sent Intel's stock surging by 9% according to Hindustan Times, reflecting strong market optimism for the domestic manufacturing initiative.
This collaboration aims to diversify Apple's manufacturing base, which currently relies heavily on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for its advanced production lines. TSMC's facilities are in high demand from leading AI chipmakers such as Nvidia and AMD.
Intel had reportedly reached a preliminary deal to make some chips for Apple following discussions spanning over a year, as reported by the Wall Street Journal in May. Trump's announcement, made via social media, also criticized past administrations for allowing foreign entities to "steal our Semiconductor Factories" and emphasized the need to protect US industries with tariffs.
The partnership signifies a strategic shift towards bolstering domestic chip production and reducing reliance on overseas supply chains.
