The latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals significant public opposition to the ongoing military action against Iran, with 56% of Americans against the conflict now in its second week.
President Trump's handling of the situation also faces widespread disapproval, with only 36% expressing approval, a decline from a similar poll in January 2020. A majority (55%) perceives Iran as a minor or no threat to the U.S., contrasting with the administration's justifications for military action. Deep partisan divides are evident: 84% of Republicans support the military action, while 86% of Democrats and 61% of independents oppose it.
Similar splits are seen in approval of Trump's handling and the perceived threat level of Iran. Younger demographics (18-29), women, and Black and Latino voters show stronger opposition to military action and lower approval for Trump's approach.
Notably, even white evangelical Christians, a key Trump base, show slightly lower-than-usual approval for his Iran policy at 68%. These findings highlight a fractured national consensus on foreign policy, potentially influencing future political decisions and market sentiment related to geopolitical stability.
The survey of 1,591 national respondents has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
