Executive Change · Government Instability · Justice Department · Political Risk
Pam Bondi, Attorney General under President Donald Trump, was fired on Thursday, April 3, 2026, becoming the second Cabinet member dismissed this year, due to Trump's dissatisfaction with her inability to prosecute his perceived political enemies, despite her efforts to weaponize the Justice Department.
Bondi accepted the role knowing Trump's objective to transform the Justice Department into a tool for revenge. She showed no hesitation, but her attempts to find legal grounds against Trump’s foes largely failed.
Her efforts, including installing inexperienced prosecutors, resulted in weak prosecutions; many failed grand jury indictments or were overturned, such as those against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Investigations into former President Joe Biden, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey yielded no charges.
The most successful indictment, against former national security advisor John Bolton, originated from the Biden administration. Bondi’s choices severely damaged the Justice Department’s reputation, hollowed out its staff, and left her successor ill-equipped to uphold laws fairly and evenly.
