President Trump has ordered all federal agencies to immediately cease using technology from the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, escalating a dispute between the company and the Department of Defense.

The Pentagon, led by Secretary Pete Hegseth, had demanded unfettered access to Anthropic's AI models for all lawful uses, including potentially autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused, citing ethical concerns about AI undermining democratic values and the inability to ensure responsible use in critical situations.

In response, the Pentagon designated Anthropic a "Supply-Chain Risk to National Security," effectively blacklisting the company from doing business with the military. This move comes after the Defense Department awarded significant contracts to AI companies, including Anthropic, aiming to become an "AI-first" force.

The conflict highlights the growing leverage of commercial AI developers and the challenges in balancing technological advancement with ethical considerations and national security.
