Louvre Museum director Laurence des Cars has resigned amid ongoing criticism following security failures, including a daylight robbery of jewels in October.
The resignation was accepted by French President Emmanuel Macron, who cited the need for appeasement and a new impetus for major security and modernization projects. Des Cars had previously alerted senior officials to the museum's deteriorating infrastructure and inadequate staffing, noting that security systems were insufficient and staff were not armed.
The museum faces structural issues, overcrowding, and recent staff strikes over pay and working conditions. A renovation program, estimated to cost between €700-800 million over ten years, is underway, partly funded by increased ticket prices for non-European visitors.
