Tesla officially delivered its first production battery-electric Semi trucks to PepsiCo on December 1, 2022, five years after its initial debut, demonstrating a 500-mile range with a fully loaded vehicle weighing just under 82,000 pounds.
The delivery event, held at Tesla's Nevada facility, confirmed the Semi's long-promised capabilities, including a successful 500-mile single-charge test run from Northern California to San Diego, traversing Grapevine Pass. Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, acknowledged the five-year delay but expressed excitement for the delivery.
Mike Roeth, Executive Director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, who toured the production plant, highlighted the truck's simple design, requiring only nine assembly stations, and its smaller, efficient components. Despite the successful debut, Tesla did not disclose crucial details such as the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), a detailed production schedule, or pricing information.
Musk previously stated plans to build 50,000 Tesla 18-wheelers in 2024.
