Stryker, a major medical device manufacturer with $25 billion in annual revenue, has suffered a destructive cyberattack attributed to Iran-linked hacktivist group Handala.
The breach involved wiper malware that erased data across corporate networks, impacting over 200,000 mobile devices, servers, and laptops globally, and allegedly extracting 50 terabytes of corporate data. This sweeping attack brought Stryker's global workforce of 56,000 employees across 61 countries to a halt, disrupting production and distribution of critical medical supplies like surgical instruments, orthopedic implants, and hospital beds.
Automated electronic ordering platforms are disabled, raising concerns about potential equipment shortages for hospitals worldwide. Manufacturing facilities, including a major hub in Cork, Ireland, faced immediate shutdowns.
While existing medical equipment remains secure and operational, the manual processing of orders and paused shipments indicate significant operational bottlenecks and financial implications for Stryker and the broader healthcare supply chain. The attackers cited recent military action in the Middle East as motivation.
