Sir Keir Starmer resigned as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader on Monday, less than two years after a landslide election win, following significant losses of over 1,000 seats in recent local elections and a loss of confidence from his parliamentary party.
Starmer, 63, announced his departure from 10 Downing Street, stating he accepted his parliamentary party's answer regarding his leadership. Nominations for a new Labour leader open on July 9, with the process concluding by the summer recess.
Andy Burnham, former Greater Manchester mayor, is the overwhelming favorite to succeed Starmer, having recently defeated Reform UK by almost 20 percentage points in a by-election in Makerfield. This marks the seventh UK prime minister in 10 years since the Brexit referendum, intensifying calls for an early general election, though the next one is not legally required until July 2029.
Nigel Farage of Reform UK, who claims to have "deposed" Starmer, is actively campaigning for an immediate general election, citing Labour's significant losses in post-industrial England, Scotland, and Wales, including losing control of the Senedd for the first time since 1999. Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned earlier, expressing a lack of confidence in Starmer's vision.
