SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is acquiring AI coding startup Anysphere, known for its Cursor agent, for US$60 billion in an all-stock transaction, aiming to significantly strengthen its presence in the lucrative enterprise AI tools market following its recent $2 trillion IPO valuation.
This acquisition, expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, integrates Cursor's popular AI coding agent into xAI, a SpaceX subsidiary, enhancing its capabilities in a sector generating substantial business revenue. SpaceX had previously pitched an addressable market worth $28.5 trillion to IPO investors, with a large share anticipated from enterprise AI solutions.
Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, stated that Cursor's impressive coding models relative to cost make this a positive strategic move for SpaceX, despite Cursor's smaller scale compared to rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. The all-stock nature of the deal leverages SpaceX's towering valuation, minimizing equity dilution, a point highlighted by billionaire Bill Ackman.
Cursor has demonstrated rapid growth since its 2022 founding, reporting $2.6 billion in annualized business-to-business revenue. Following the announcement, SpaceX shares jumped 10 percent in early trading, adding approximately $247 billion to its market capitalization of $2.53 trillion, positioning the company to surpass Amazon in market value.
SpaceX also maintains existing cloud computing capacity lease agreements with Anthropic and Google, which include 90-day termination clauses, providing flexibility to reclaim resources if internal demand for Grok and Cursor increases.
