Rivian, in partnership with battery-recycling company Redwood Materials, is establishing the largest repurposed-battery energy storage system for an automotive manufacturer in the U.S. at its Normal, Illinois factory, utilizing over 100 Rivian EV batteries to provide 10 megawatt-hours of energy.
The system, expected to be completed later this year, will reduce the plant’s reliance on the power grid during peak demand hours, saving Rivian money and decreasing grid demand, according to CEO RJ Scaringe, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, will integrate batteries from Rivian’s test vehicles or those with functional batteries that can no longer drive into power storage units.
This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable energy management and circular economy principles within the automotive sector. The project’s cost was not disclosed by either company.
