OpenAI has updated its safety protocols to more readily refer accounts to law enforcement, following a tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. The company's vice-president of global policy, Ann O'Leary, stated in a letter that under new policies developed "several months ago," the account of the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, would have been flagged to authorities if discovered today.

This comes after it was revealed that a second account belonging to Van Rootselaar was flagged to police, even though her initial account was banned in June for posts about gun violence. OpenAI previously stated that Van Rootselaar's initial activities did not meet their threshold for law enforcement notification due to a lack of identified credible or imminent planning.

The Canadian government, including Premier David Eby and AI Minister Evan Solomon, has expressed disappointment and is considering new regulations for AI companies, emphasizing that all options are on the table to prevent future tragedies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has agreed to meet with Premier Eby to discuss safety policies.
