Instagram is implementing a new feature that will notify parents if their children repeatedly search for terms related to suicide and self-harm.

This alert system will only be active for parents enrolled in Instagram's parental supervision program and will be delivered via email, text, WhatsApp, or an in-app notification. The company states its goal is to empower parents to intervene when teens may need support, while also aiming to avoid overwhelming users with unnecessary alerts.

This move comes amid ongoing legal challenges for Meta, including trials alleging that its platforms deliberately addict and harm minors. Critics, however, argue that this measure shifts the responsibility to parents rather than addressing fundamental design flaws in the platform's algorithms and architecture.

Instagram is also developing similar notifications for AI interactions concerning sensitive topics.
