Candela · Electric Ferries · Hydrofoil · Norway Transport
Norway's transport operator Boreal AS placed an order for 20 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries, marking the largest deployment of its kind to date and significantly advancing electric maritime transport in the region.
The P-12 ferries address the challenge of electrifying high-speed routes in Norway's fjords by reducing energy consumption by approximately 80% compared to traditional vessels, achieved by lifting the hull out of the water using computer-controlled carbon fiber hydrofoils. This efficiency allows for a 40 nautical mile range at 25 knots with 25 passengers, directly competing with diesel-powered "hurtigbåtar." Crucially, the P-12 recharges in about an hour using standard DC fast chargers, circumventing the need for megawatt-scale charging infrastructure.
The first two vessels arrive in 2027, with the full fleet deployed by 2030. This large-scale order signals a significant shift towards high-efficiency electric ferries in major transit systems, with Norway serving as a critical proving ground for global expansion.
