Microsoft's GitHub unit faces significant challenges in the generative AI coding market, experiencing repeated outages, executive turnover, and losing market share to competitors like Cursor and Anthropic's Claude Code, impacting its early advantage despite substantial investment in OpenAI.
GitHub's infrastructure has sagged under the pressure of increased "agentic coding" usage, suffering over a dozen incidents lasting more than an hour since March, according to its status page. This unreliability, coupled with a slow migration to Microsoft Azure data centers and internal leadership turmoil, has led enterprise customers like Cisco to express "real concerns" and explore alternatives such as GitLab, Amazon, and Atlassian.
Despite CEO Satya Nadella's claims of "unprecedented growth" for GitHub, its Copilot technology has lagged rivals in user resonance, contributing to Microsoft's stock price being down 13% this year, trailing megacap peers. Competitors like Cursor, which recently forged a deal with SpaceX, and Anthropic's Claude Code have rapidly gained popularity, with Cursor surpassing GitHub Copilot in market share among Ramp customers.
GitHub also temporarily halted new individual Copilot plans and will implement usage-based billing in June, potentially increasing costs and driving developers away, as exemplified by former FanDuel developer Jeremy Bray.
