The Maine Legislature supported a bill creating three new income tax brackets with higher rates for residents earning $144,500 and more, effective 2025, while most earners will see the same or lower rates.
This legislative action increases income thresholds for current tax brackets and introduces progressively higher tax rates for wealthier residents. Currently, single individuals earning over $58,050 pay $3,686 plus 7.15% of the excess, and couples filing jointly earning over $116,100 pay $7,371 plus 7.15% of the excess.
The new proposal establishes three new brackets for individuals making $144,500 and more, subjecting them to higher tax rates. Rep.
Meldon Carmichael (R-Greenbush) introduced the bill, stating a need to assist middle-class workers who have been economically disadvantaged, contrasting with Gov. Janet Mills' assessment of a "strong state." Additionally, the Maine Department of Administrative & Financial Services announced extended tax filing deadlines for certain counties due to winter storms, with deadlines shifted to June 17 or July 15 for individual, corporate, fiduciary, and franchise taxes.
Aroostook County residents received no extensions.
