A fatal runway collision occurred at New York's LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada Express CRJ-900, operated by Jazz Aviation, collided with a fire truck during landing, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and first officer and dozens of injuries.
This incident renews focus on runway incursions, defined as unauthorized presence in designated aircraft areas. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) data reported 97 runway incursions in January, a decrease from 133 in the same month last year.
Of these, 56 were attributed to pilot deviation and 22 to vehicle or pedestrian deviations. Boyd Group International President Mike Boyd emphasized the complexity of airport operations and human dependency, stating the system occasionally fails despite general safety.
The collision led to hundreds of flight cancellations at LaGuardia. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating.
The FAA is implementing new technology to mitigate runway accident risks, acknowledging the need for improved safety systems to prevent recurring issues.
