An Air Canada Express jet tragically collided with a fire truck on a LaGuardia Airport runway Sunday night, resulting in the immediate deaths of the two pilots aboard the plane, despite the miraculous survival of all passengers, other crew, and the two truck occupants.
The fire truck, which was part of a line of emergency vehicles, had received initial approval to cross the tarmac to respond to a separate aircraft reporting an odor. However, the Air Canada plane simultaneously received clearance to land on the same runway.
Moments before the devastating impact, air traffic control desperately pleaded with the fire truck to stop, as captured in audio recordings. The collision completely obliterated the fire truck and severely damaged the jet's nose, scattering metal debris across the runway.
One of the deceased pilots was identified as Antoine Forest in subsequent coverage. While the crash tragically claimed two lives, an expert noted in related reports that specific factors prevented a more catastrophic outcome for the remaining individuals.
The incident caused significant operational disruptions, grounding all LaGuardia operations into Monday afternoon.
