The European Parliament voted 417 to 154, with 71 abstentions, on Thursday, March 27, 2026, to advance legislation implementing the European Union’s commitments under its trade agreement with the United States.
This legislation eliminates EU import duties on U.S. industrial goods and expands access for U.S. agricultural products, central to the agreement reached in Turnberry, Scotland, last July. It also extends zero-duty treatment for U.S. lobsters, a provision established in 2020.
Parliament incorporated safeguards due to concerns about U.S. adherence, specifically regarding President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. This vote does not finalize the legislation; representatives from the European Parliament and EU member state governments will negotiate final texts before a final approval vote by EU lawmakers, anticipated in April or May, as reported by Investing.com.
