Over 60,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers face missed paychecks as Democrats and Republicans remain at odds over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, with no immediate resolution in sight to prevent further pay disruptions.
These TSA workers will receive partial paychecks this week for work completed before funding expired, but no further pay until Congress reaches a deal. Unlike a previous 43-day government shutdown where military service members received transferred funds, TSA workers will not get similar treatment due to different funding streams, as a White House official confirmed.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, stated that missed paychecks will lead to longer airport lines and flight cancellations, a scenario that occurred during the previous shutdown. Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, place the responsibility for negotiations on the Trump administration, with Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat, indicating talks have "flatlined." Both sides have rejected offers over the last two weeks, prolonging the funding impasse.
