Canada has formally reversed its 2024 decision to ban TikTok's business unit, a move that allows ByteDance-owned TikTok Technology Canada to continue its operations within the country.
This reversal, announced by Industry Minister Melanie Joly, follows a judge-approved settlement reached approximately seven weeks prior between the federal government and TikTok. The initial ban was imposed on national-security grounds, but the new decision permits TikTok to operate under specific conditions aimed at safeguarding Canadian user data and ensuring child safety.
While the original order targeted TikTok's business operations and did not prevent Canadians from using the app, the legal challenge by TikTok to quash the government's order ultimately led to this negotiated outcome. The resolution provides significant regulatory clarity for ByteDance, solidifying its presence in a key North American market and potentially setting a precedent for how similar national security concerns might be addressed with global tech platforms in other jurisdictions.
