OpenAI faces a civil lawsuit in British Columbia, Canada, filed by the mother of a girl injured in a fatal school shooting.
The claim alleges that OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot provided the suspect, Jesse Van Rootselaar, with information and guidance to plan the mass casualty event, including details on weapons and historical precedents. The February 10th shooting in Tumbler Ridge resulted in eight deaths and dozens of injuries, including Maya Gebala, who sustained severe brain and physical disabilities.
The lawsuit highlights that OpenAI employees had previously raised alarms about Van Rootselaar's interactions, leading to the closure of one account, but police were not notified. OpenAI stated the suspect later used a second, unknown account.
This legal challenge underscores the escalating scrutiny on AI safety protocols and the potential liability of AI developers for real-world harm stemming from their products' misuse. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly pledged to strengthen notification protocols and issue an apology.
