German media conglomerate Axel Springer has finalized the acquisition of Telegraph Media Group, publisher of the 171-year-old Daily Telegraph and its Sunday counterpart, for £575 million ($766 million).
This strategic move concludes a prolonged ownership saga for the British conservative newspaper, which was put up for sale by the Barclay family to settle debts. Axel Springer, known for titles like Bild and Politico, aims to establish the Telegraph as the premier center-right media voice in the English-speaking world and aggressively expand its reach into the U.S. market.
The deal represents a long-held ambition for Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner, following previous unsuccessful bids for the Telegraph in 2004 and the Financial Times in 2015. The acquisition follows the withdrawal of an Abu Dhabi-backed consortium's offer due to UK government opposition over foreign state ownership, and a rival bid from Daily Mail and General Trust that faced regulatory hurdles concerning competition and media plurality.
The Spectator magazine was sold separately.
