Airline Fees · American Airlines · Ancillary Revenue · Jet Fuel Costs
American Airlines is implementing significant fee increases for checked baggage and reducing perks for economy fliers on domestic and short-haul international routes, effective immediately, as the carrier seeks to protect its margins against soaring jet fuel costs.
The airline raised first and second checked bag fees by $10 each, increased the third checked bag cost by $50 to $200, and added a $5 bump for basic economy checked bags. Basic economy passengers will also incur seat selection fees and lose eligibility for complimentary system-wide upgrades starting May 18.
These strategic adjustments position American Airlines as one of the final major U.S. carriers to implement such measures, directly responding to a dramatic surge in operating costs driven by higher jet fuel prices. According to the International Air Transport Association, jet fuel has climbed from an average of $85-$90 per barrel in February to approximately $209 per barrel globally, a direct consequence of Middle East tensions disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
This move aims to offset the financial pressure from these elevated fuel expenses, ensuring the airline's profitability. Travelers who purchase tickets in premium cabins will continue to receive free baggage on both domestic and international flights, maintaining a differentiated service offering.
