The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role, a technical implementer embedded with customers to configure complex platforms and drive adoption, is experiencing a significant surge in demand.
While Palantir popularized the concept years ago, recent actions by OpenAI have ignited global interest. OpenAI's international managing director, Oliver Jay, announced a new FDE engineering role in late July 2025, addressing a critical bottleneck: bridging the gap from client trials to production.
This move, following Colin Jarvis's LinkedIn announcement of leading OpenAI's new FDE function, has led to immediate hiring in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan. FDEs are distinct from traditional product software engineers, focusing on bespoke client outcomes, workflow design, data integration, and operational stability on-site. Their responsibilities span coding, data plumbing, access controls, and incident response, often commanding higher pay due to the diverse skill set required.
Beyond OpenAI, firms like Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Databricks, and Salesforce are also actively recruiting FDEs to tackle similar trial-to-production challenges. This trend signals a strategic shift for platform companies, particularly in AI, data, identity, and ERP, to accelerate time-to-value and ensure robust customer adoption, with many more FDE openings anticipated in the next 12-24 months.
