Adobe · Artificial Intelligence · CEO Transition · Creative Software
Shantanu Narayen, Adobe's long-serving CEO, is stepping down after nearly two decades, transitioning to chairman once a successor is named.
This leadership change occurs as Adobe navigates a rapidly evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence and heightened competition in creative software. Narayen is credited with orchestrating Adobe's pivotal shift to a cloud-based subscription model, dramatically expanding its workforce from 3,000 to over 30,000 employees and growing annual revenue from under $1 billion to more than $25 billion. The company is deeply focused on embedding generative AI, particularly its Firefly models, into flagship products like Photoshop and Premiere Pro, as well as its Experience Cloud.
Adobe reported that annualized revenue from its AI-first products more than tripled year-over-year in Q1 fiscal 2026, signaling a potential new billion-dollar product line. Despite this AI momentum, Adobe recently faced a setback with the abandoned $20 billion acquisition of Figma due to antitrust concerns.
The search for Narayen's replacement, overseen by Frank Calderoni, will consider both internal and external candidates, aiming to ensure a smooth transition during this critical technological inflection point for the company.
