Project Prometheus, an artificial intelligence lab co-founded by Jeff Bezos and Vikram Bajaj, is raising tens of billions of dollars to acquire businesses disrupted by AI, aiming to improve their margins through technology application, following a previous $6.2 billion raise that valued the company at $30 billion.
This initiative, described by Financial Times sources as a "manufacturing transformation vehicle," focuses on applying AI to manufacturing and industry. Robert Nelsen, a director at Project Prometheus and co-founder of ARCH Venture Partners, emphasized the significant challenge and rapid pace of AI innovation in reinventing the physical world.
Project Prometheus launched in November with initial financing, some from Bezos, marking his first official operational role since leaving Amazon. The company has recruited nearly 100 employees from leading AI firms like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta.
It also acquired computer agent maker General Agents, whose CEO Sherjil Ozair and colleagues joined the team. General Agents' mission is to "liberate humanity from digital labor," aligning with the broader trend of physical AI emerging as the next stage of robotics, moving beyond traditional automation.
