United Airlines announced a significant fleet modernization and premium experience expansion, committing to take delivery of over 250 new aircraft by April 2028, the most by any airline in a two-year period, to differentiate itself and win brand loyal customers.
This initiative builds on the successful "United Next" growth strategy launched in 2021, which has already seen the addition of 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 237 Boeing 737 MAX, and 67 Airbus A321neos, along with a 40% increase in premium seats per North American departure. The new fleet includes 47 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with "Elevated" interiors, 68 Airbus A321neos (40 Coastliners, 28 XLRs), and 119 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
The "Coastliner" Airbus A321neo will introduce lie-flat United Polaris business class and lounge access on domestic transcontinental routes, a first for United's domestic travelers. The A321XLR will replace Boeing 757s on international short-to-medium-haul routes, offering 32 premium seats.
A redesigned CRJ450, operated by SkyWest, will connect smaller cities to Denver and Chicago hubs, featuring a spacious United First cabin. The new 787-9 with the "Elevated" interior, debuting internationally on April 22, features United Polaris Studio suites, 25% larger than standard Polaris seats, with privacy doors and advanced amenities.
United CEO Scott Kirby stated the plan accelerates their goal to be the best brand loyal airline, creating a consistent, premium onboard experience. Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella emphasized the scope and scale of innovation.
The airline also invests in amenities for all travelers, including free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, enhanced in-flight entertainment, and larger overhead bins.
