OpenAI is shutting down its AI video generation app Sora, less than a year after its September launch, a move that helps the startup cut costs and ends its $1 billion deal with The Walt Disney Company ahead of an expected initial public offering later this year.
Sora saw a surge in popularity shortly after its launch. The shutdown helps OpenAI improve financial metrics that broaden its appeal to public investors ahead of its market debut.
OpenAI's decision terminates a three-year deal where Disney agreed to invest $1 billion in the AI startup, licensing hundreds of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters for Sora and featuring Sora-generated videos on its Disney+ streaming service. A Disney spokesperson told Investopedia that the company respects OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and shift its priorities elsewhere.
OpenAI focuses on its business-facing and coding products.
