North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for an "exponential" expansion of the country's atomic arsenal during a visit to a newly operational uranium-enrichment factory, with production capacity for weapons-grade nuclear material more than doubling over the past five years.
Kim instructed officials to further increase output to meet long-term strategic goals, citing worsening security threats and confrontation with "the most ferocious enemies." State media agency KCNA reported Kim outlined guidelines for accelerating both qualitative and quantitative expansion of the nuclear arsenal. An official at South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the new facility is a uranium-enrichment site.
Analysts, including Chad O’Carroll, founder of NK News, interpret Kim's visit as reinforcing North Korea's negotiating position ahead of potential diplomatic engagement, possibly linked to a future visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, suggests Pyongyang uses South Korea's pursuit of a nuclear-powered submarine and its talks with Washington over uranium enrichment rights as pretexts for its accelerated weapons program.
North Korea is estimated to possess around 50 nuclear warheads.
