Swiss food giant Nestle's KitKat brand reported the theft of a truck carrying 413,793 units, or 12 tonnes, of its new chocolate range last week, creating a risk of significant product shortages across European markets before Easter.
The shipment disappeared during transit from central Italy to Poland, intended for distribution in various European countries, with the vehicle and its contents remaining unaccounted for. Nestle confirmed the theft in a statement sent to AFP on Saturday, acknowledging that consumers will struggle to find their favorite chocolates ahead of the holiday.
A brand spokesperson noted, "it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate." Investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners. KitKat warns the missing chocolate bars could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets and has implemented a tracing system using unique batch codes on each bar to identify and report stolen goods.
