NASA's new administrator, Jared Isaacman, has strongly criticized Boeing and NASA management over the Starliner spacecraft's troubled debut mission.
He declared the mission a "Type A mishap," indicating a potential crew endangerment, and blamed poor leadership and decision-making for issues that left astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams stranded at the International Space Station for over nine months. Isaacman emphasized the need to thoroughly understand and fix Starliner's problems before further crewed flights.
A NASA report highlighted leadership and cultural missteps, similar to those seen in past shuttle disasters. The agency acknowledged its own failures in managing the situation.
Boeing stated it is implementing corrective actions and cultural changes, while the Starliner program is expected to continue, though a timeline for its return to astronaut flights remains uncertain. This grounding leaves SpaceX as the sole U.S. provider for astronaut transport.
