The death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has triggered widespread violence across Mexico.

The U.S. military played a role in the operation that led to his death, though Mexican military forces are credited with the success. In response to El Mencho's killing, cartel members blocked roads, torched vehicles and businesses, and 25 National Guard members were killed in separate attacks.

The CJNG, founded in 2009, is one of Mexico's most violent cartels, involved in drug trafficking, extortion, fuel theft, and human trafficking, and has a significant presence both within Mexico and the United States. Experts believe El Mencho's death creates a power vacuum that could lead to violent realignments within the organization and potentially weaken it against rivals like the Sinaloa cartel.

The U.S. has classified CJNG as a terrorist organization.
